Deep Eats Volume 6

What is a sandwich, anyway?

Welcome back! It’s been so long. 

I initially wrote this as part of Volume 5. When it grew too long to expect anyone to read in one sitting, I split it in two — I’ve always thought of Deep Eats as more of a snack than a four-course meal, and never intended it to end up on longform.org. So to make up for lost time, Volume 6 arrives hot on the heels of 5. 

None of the following are sandwiches in the traditional sense (some in any sense at all), though at least the first is sandwich-adjacent. I’ve been very food motivated for most of my life, but never formalized my relationship with it until Deep Eats. A dear friend’s SF Burger Grand Prix in 2019 was a major inspiration to begin writing about food, and it cemented within me a deep and abiding love of burgers. It’s quite fitting that the majority of Volume 6 is dedicated to the burger, even though I started off thinking about sandwiches.

A final note: on the advice of an astute reader I started a Google Map of all the places I’ve written up!
